Women’s Golf – November 2017 Update
Our golfing year is winding down, but there have been, and still to come many events to participate in, starting off with the Club Foursomes Championships, and thank you to the Swampies for their sponsorship, also the sausage sizzlers team of Bob Saunders & I think the caramelised onions were the pièce de résistance.
So after 27 holes (and aren’t we glad that only happens once a year!) the cream at the top in Division1, Gross Champions for the second year in a row are Lyn McMurray & Karen Myles, Karen couldn’t be a the Presentation, but a very excited Lyn accepted on behalf of both. Unsurprisingly, Gwen Gray & Patsy Elliott also played a great game, and were on hand to accept their prizes as runners up.
An historic win for Nett winners of Division 1 (on a countback) to the sister team of Debbie Neate & Jan Weiley, as I think this is the first time siblings have won this event. (Patsy will let me know if this is not the case!) The ever consistent Jackie Crawford with her partner Del Taylor were runners up.
The Division 2 Gross Champions were the first time team of Julia Campbell & Chris Cayley who were naturally both thrilled with their win, however due to commitments unable to attend Presentation. Another first time team of Linda Birrell & Rhonda Wright were on hand to accept their prizes as runners up.
There was ‘excitement plus’ from the Division 2 Nett Winners of Sue Brook & Kathy Yewdall, who were thrilled to be in the winners circle, with Pat Myles & Rhonda Barron the worthy runners up.
Medal of Medals on 5th October has been played and won, with the winner announced at the Christmas Presentation. Also on this day, Jan Johnson was presented with flowers and a card from the membership, plus chocolates and a hat clip from the Vets for her 80th birthday- goodonya Jan.
Next on the calendar was Captains & Presidents Day with the golf course awash in a sea of blue and red. Always a day played with good humour and a vast amount of sledging from both sides, but, there can only be one winner and – (drum roll), for the second year the Presidents team was most presidential in accepting they were the better team on the day! Always good fun.
following week we had a good turnout for the AGM. Ladies golf now has a new Captain in Narelle Mayes, and I’m sure as well as the committee, all members will give Narelle their utmost support in a role that as well as fulfilling, can also be challenging both in time and effort. Wendy has taken the post of Vice Captain for the next year, and I know we have all appreciated the dedication she showed to Ladies Golf during her captaincy, steering us through the introduction of the slope system and the implementation of MiClub – no easy feat. Wendy was also a recipient this year of the Everglades Merit Award. Heather Burrett stepped down from commitee after giving her all for 10 years, and she was thanked most heartily.
Marilyn Macalpine and Rhonda Wright are now members of the general committee, and very keen to do whatever it takes.
As if all this wasn’t enough, we’ve also had Vets Closing Day and Pink Ribbon Day – with more to come!
Vet’s Closing Day arrived with the temperature reaching 33°, however our vets are a hardy lot and all finished, very grateful for the air conditioning once inside the club. The luncheon of ‘build a bun’ followed by fruit platters was a great success thanks to Nathan and his staff, and to Sam for the set up of the room. Thank you also for your very generous donations of prizes, resulting in a vast array on the raffle table.
The winner on the day over the field was Pat Myles with a terrific score of 39, and a very pleased Kaye McKay came in as runner up.
Over 50’s (and we don’t have many of them!) winner was Gayle Colley, the over 60’s (we have a few more of them!) was won by Pat Clarke, with Judy Anderson winning the over 70’s (we have plenty of them!). Lorna (Bear) Turner was the proud winner of the over 80’s (we have a few of them as well!). Josie Cadden, Pat Myles, Margie Coutts and Jan Monty were the winners of the team event.
Will the excitement never end….huge thanks to Sandy Kogan of Ray White Real Estate for sponsoring Pink Ribbon Day. With the prospect of a team ambrose and no handicapping, fun was had by by all, albeit very hotly contested! The field looked very ‘pretty in pink’ and winning the day was the team of Steph Rapmund, Trish Melnik, Kay McKay and Judy Hocking, who apparently played flawless golf, so excellent result. Whilst it was a day of fun, there was also the realisation that all of us have been touched by breast cancer through ourselves and family and friends. At time of writing I don’t have the amount raised for the day, however as well as Sandy Kogan’s sponsorship, her agency Ray White Umina generously donated $300.
Continuous Competition for 2017 has now finished, and the Summer Cup has commenced. Ham Day on the 23rd and Closing Day on the 30th to look forwood to, with Christmas lunch and Presentation on 7th December.
